NAGLREP launched a new era at the recent NAGLREP Conference in Palm Springs. The organizations founder Jeff Berger said “I am proud to announce NAGLREP and PFLAG signed a partnership with a mission of increasing LGBT homeownership. The way we will achieve this lofty goal is by engaging LGBT consumers through our network of chapters.”

NAGLREP Northern Nevada chapter president A.J. Palomar was excited to hear the news and set a goal for his local chapter to engage with PFLAG, the first and largest organization for LGBTQ+ people, their parents and families, and allies.

A.J. said “we’re excited to share the NAGLREP Nevada chapter will host a Homebuyer Education Fair titled “The Yellow Brick Road to Homeownership” February 6 at the Reno LGBT Center.

“I serve on the board of Northern Nevada LGBT Business Leaders with Sherrie Scaffidi of PFLAG Carson City,” A.J. said. “She was 100% committed to working with NAGLREP and we quickly engaged the neighboring PFLAG Reno chapter thanks to Janine Comoletti. Our mission is to raise awareness of the benefits of homeownership to first time LGBTQ homebuyers.  It’s a win / win with our chapter members providing education to potential homebuyers.”

Attendees will learn from a variety of real estate related practitioners including REALTORS, mortgage and title professionals, home inspectors, lawyers, and a member of city government.

“A variety of exhibit tables will be set up for attendees to walk around and learn about the home buying process” A.J. said. “We’re serving hor’s d oeuvres and creating a comfortable environment for homebuyer education. Home ownership plays a critical role in financial security and we want to help.”

To market the event to the local LGBTQ community, the two PFLAG chapters are promoting the event to their members and sharing on their radio show, and NAGLREP has began a social media ad campaign. Chase International and the chapter’s six other annual partners are also assisting in promotions and covering the cost of the event.

“Our NAGLREP chapter has become pretty influential in the Reno area LGBT community and this is the next step for us,” A.J. said. “It takes a lot of teamwork to coordinate and we are excited about our partnership with PFLAG. They can help us bring the LGBT community to the table and we have the expertise and resources to educate, and increase LGBT homeownership in our community.”

Around the nation NAGLREP chapters have begun outreach to local PFLAG leadership working to have many speak at coming chapter Lunch and Learns.

“Nationally NAGLREP has made great strides in our advocacy work. In addition to PFLAG, we’ve been recognized by the likes of HRC, NGLCC, and the Matthew Shepard Foundation” Berger said. “We will continue to fight to eradicate housing discrimination and increase homeownership levels in the LGBT community. Our community’s home ownership rates are dramatically low at 49% compared to the national average of 64%, and we believe that our relationship with PFLAG can help us make positive inroads. A.J. and the Northern Nevada chapter are doing great work to get us going.”
