Treat People Right and It Comes Back Full Circle
A NAGLREP Social Spotlight by Darla Michelsen
Shannon Lindstrom has been a Realtor in the Greater Minneapolis St. Paul area for over 12 years. Prior to being a Realtor she and her husband worked in the mortgage and banking business and paved the way for understanding what makes a transaction work.
Shannon describes herself as naturally hyper and energetic and believes strongly what she does for her clients is rewarding and fun. It surely keeps her very busy. She contributes her success to open and direct communication with her clients and often says each transaction is a learning experience.
Shannon is a past board member for NAGLREP and is currently involved with the local NAGLREP Minneapolis chapter, as well as many community organizations that support education for transgender awareness.
Darla Michelsen: What areas or niche do you work in your Real Estate market?
Shannon Lindstrom: I work the city! I work with the young crowd and more recently the empty nesters that have downsized and want the city experience. There is so much that the city offers, such as being close to art galleries, farmer’s markets, and coffee shops. For me it’s about assisting people in creating a new lifestyle. Most of my clients relocating to the city are now enjoying the walkability to shopping and cafes.
DM: What is different or unique about your current market?
SL: It’s a very busy and active market here. But like many cities we continue to have a very low inventory, so there can be added urgency for sellers and buyers too. You really have to be on your toes with writing offers and even showing properties, but mostly dealing with concerns of your clients.
DM: What advice would you give to someone wanting to get into real estate as a new career?
SL: My advice would be to find a mentor to help you and teach you the ropes.
I’m a firm advocate for education, because when I first started out I was on my own.
Having someone to take you out there and show you around is so helpful.
I would also say to be patient. As a Realtor you need to learn to have empathic listening skills. Finding out what’s important to people is so key to being successful.
DM: Why do you believe it’s important to belong to an association like NAGLREP?
SL: Dealing with my own personal experience with my daughter transitioning into my son, there were many emotions, and unwanted attention that comes with going through something so life changing- even the fact that you don’t know who to turn to with all your questions. NAGLREP and Jeff Berger not only helped me through my own personal journey but allowed me in the process to be able to create change and awareness for these LGBT youth by reaching out and doing work for the organization. NAGLREP is about Advocacy and making a difference. It’s so much more than a referral website.
DM: What are three things people wouldn’t know about you?
SL: I’m funny and have a good sense of humor unless you cut me off on the freeway. I try to behave, but I can be mouthy. I guess I’m just a great person!! Just kidding! I’m passionate about causes that educate and have given much of my time to be involved in issues that have changed my personal life.
DM: Are there things you like to do in your free time?
SL: Yes, I like to work out and do yoga, and love going to street festivals.
DM: What do you like about doing yoga?
SL: I like the grounding and meditation that calms you as a busy person. It allows me relax and separate myself from the world, and the world of Real Estate at least for a little while.
Darla Michelsen: Shannon is truly a unique and joyful person. Her dedication to her clients and her causes seem to be what gives her such boundless energy. Shannon is driven to give of herself in areas where she can make a difference in someone’s life. No doubt she’s made positive changes for anyone who crossed her path.
Keeping up with her could be a challenge!
